Supreme Court rejects plea seeking President rule in Uttar Pradesh

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a PIL that sought imposition of President’s rule in Uttar Pradesh for alleged breakdown of constitutional machinery and rising crime in the state.

A Bench headed by CJI SA Bobde threatened to impose cost on petitioner advocate CR Jaya Sukin, saying there was no research on the claims made in his petition. Sukin — who cited NCRB data — said he had done his research and the crime graph had gone up in UP. Imposition of Article 356 of the Constitution in UP is necessary to save the Indian democracy and lives of 20 crore people,” he said. — TNS
