Bengaluru, February 18

Kannada playback singer Sushmitha, 27, allegedly committed suicide by hanging at her mother's residence in the city, police said on Monday.

Her mother has alleged dowry harassment as reason for her daughter's death.

She took the extreme step on Sunday night, police sources said.

According to the sources, she got married to Sharath Kumar around one and half years ago.

Differences between the couple cropped up later, forcing her to stay at her mother's house.

According to News Minute, Sushmita had named Sharath, Vaidehi and Geetha as being responsible for her death, and she had also said that she did not want to die in her husband’s place.

She also said: “Do not leave my in-laws” as part of the message sent on WhatsApp to her mother and brother.

Her note read: "Sorry mom, I am paying the price for my mistakes. I have undergone a lot of torture. Please don't spare them. I didn't want to die in their house. I was being harassed from the first day but I didn't tell anyone."

The talented playback singer had crooned for Kannada movies like 'Srisamanya' and 'Haalu-Thuppa'. — With PTI
