Morbi bridge collapse: PM Modi inspects mishap site; speaks to survivors, officials

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday visited the Morbi bridge collapse site in Gujarat, met some of the injured persons and held a meeting with local police and district officials.

Officials briefed the prime minister about the rescue operations at the site where 135 people were killed on Sunday when a British-era suspension bridge on the Machchhu River collapsed.

Before reaching the spot, the prime minister conducted an aerial survey of the location.

Later he visited the hospital where those injured in the incident are undergoing treatment. He spent around 15 minutes in the hospital and spoke with at least six injured victims, officials said.

“Prime Minister Modi met the victims and asked them about the incident with sympathy. He also asked them about the treatment they received in the hospital,” Gujarat health secretary Manoj Agarwal told reporters.

The collapsed bridge connected Darbargadh Palace and Swaminarayan Temple in Morbi town.

The PM arrived at Darbargadh Palace where he was briefed by officials about what might have gone wrong with the bridge.

Later he visited the office of the Morbi district Superintendent of Police and met local officials and relatives of victims.

He then left for Ahmedabad by helicopter after an hour-long visit to the tragedy-struck town. PTI

Morbi bridge collapse in Gujarat result of massive corruption: Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal   

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday said the Morbi bridge collapse was a result of massive corruption and prayed for those who lost their lives in the incident.

"The Morbi bridge collapse was a result of massive corruption and I pray for the victims. Why was a watch-making company, which had no experience of bridge construction, allowed to do so?" he said during a press conference.

“Morbi civil hospital is being painted overnight so that the poor condition of the building does not get exposed during PM Modi's photoshoot,” AAP claimed.

Congress tweets pictures showing overnight repair work

The Congress tweeted pictures showing repair work going on inside the Morbi hospital and launched a tirade against the BJP.

Slamming the BJP for this “eventbaazi”, the Congress tweeted “Trasadi ka event (event of tragedy).”

6 of those injured in collapse undergoing treatment at hospital, 56 people discharged: Doctor

Six of those injured in the collapse are undergoing treatment at the hospital, while four to five other injured are being treated at a private hospital, a doctor said. So far, 56 people have been discharged, he added.

Morbi hospital given makeover ahead of Modi's visit to facility

The government hospital at Morbi was given a makeover ahead of PM Modi's visit to the facility to meet the injured.

Workers were seen cleaning and painting a portion of the 300-bed hospital, which is a ground plus two-storey structure of three wings.
