Plea in SC against citizenship to non-Muslims

Show comments

New Delhi, June 10

The Popular Front of India (PFI) on Thursday moved the Supreme Court against the Centre’s move to grant citizenship to minorities from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, currently residing in 13 districts in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Punjab.

The MHA had last month issued a notification for immediate implementation of the order under the Citizenship Act-1955 and rules framed under the law in 2009 even though the rules under the CAA, 2019, were yet to be framed.

In its petition, the PFI urged the top court to declare the notification unconstitutional, discriminatory and violative of right to equality on the ground that it deprived Muslims from seeking Indian citizenship by registration and naturalisation. — TNS
