Mumbai, March 9

The Maharashtra Government is mulling a postponement of the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament on account of the Covid-19 outbreak.

State Health Minister Rajesh Tope said his ministerial colleagues were keen on postponing the tournament which is scheduled to begin from March 29 at the Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium.

“There is a risk of diseases spreading when people gather in large numbers. We are holding discussions on whether to postpone the tournament,” Tope said. The minister said 15 persons have been quarantined in different parts of Maharashtra. However no case of Covid-19 has been detected in the state, Tope said.

The 13th edition of the IPL will kick off in Mumbai on March 29. Seven matches are scheduled to be played at Mumbai. — TNS
