Logjam in Parliament continues; Rijiju says India no more anyone’s fiefdom

As the logjam in Parliament continued unabated for the fourth consecutive day on Thursday, Union Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju stepped up the ruling BJP’s attack against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi saying his remarks on Indian democracy in London is “defamation” of the country and, therefore, people cannot remain silent.

Both the Houses of Parliament witnessed uproarious scenes as soon as they assembled for the day with members of the Opposition parties standing in the well shouting slogans against the government forcing adjournments till 2 pm.

In Rajya Sabha, the agitated opposition members were in the well even before Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar arrived in the House to start the proceedings.  

Launching a fresh attack on the Congress, though without naming it, Rijiju said, “India is not their fiefdom anymore,” and some parties are not able to digest it.

In a video released by the BJP, Rijiju is heard saying that if Rahul Gandhi “says something and the Congress gets into trouble, we have nothing to do with it”.  He went on to add: “But if he defames our country, then as the citizens of this country, we cannot remain silent.”

The Law Minister said, “Abuse us as much as you want but we can’t let you insult the nation. Rahul has insulted our judicial system, which is robust. We are demanding that Rahul apologise to the country for insulting it. India is not their fiefdom anymore, they can’t digest this fact.”

“I am an MP elected to Parliament so how can I keep quiet,” he said.

“Congress and Rahul have been rejected by the people. He has undermined the reputation of our democracy and Parliament…it is not acceptable,” Rijiju asserted.

Noting that Rahul Gandhi had lied when he said he was not allowed to speak in Parliament, Rijiju said, “He led a yatra as per his wishes - then he is saying, he wasn’t allowed to speak.”
