New Delhi, March 20

Justice has finally been done and women will definitely feel safer now, Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi said after the four men convicted of gang-rape and murder of her daughter were hanged at Tihar Jail on Friday.

Talking to reporters at her home in Dwarka, she said justice was delayed but not denied, and added that they would continue their fight for justice for India’s daughters.

“We will request the Supreme Court to issue guidelines so that no one can adopt delaying tactics in such cases in future,” she said, referring to the execution of death warrants being deferred thrice by a court on various grounds.

She said women would definitely feel safer after this execution and it would also make parents teach boys to behave with women. “After a long agonising wait, my daughter has got justice,” she said.

“After the Supreme Court hearing on Thursday night, I came home and hugged a portrait of my daughter and told her – ‘Beti nyay dila diya tumko’,” Asha Devi said, adding, “March 20 should be celebrated as Nirbhaya Nyay Divas (day of justice). This day will be written in history books.”

Nirbhaya’s father Badrinath Singh said he and his wife hadn’t slept a wink, awaiting justice.

“We haven’t slept the whole night, running from high court to Supreme Court at late night. But, finally, the moment has arrived. Our village in Ballia will now play Holi,” he told PTI outside their home.

“Our wait for justice was painful and agonising. We appeal for observing this day as Nirbhaya Nyay Divas,” he said. PTI

Resolve not to allow Nirbhaya-like incident again: Kejriwal

New Delhi: Hours after the four Nirbhaya convicts were hanged, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said it is a day to take a resolution not to allow another similar incident happen.

Taking to Twitter, Kejriwal also called for a collective resolution by police, courts, states and the central government to remove loopholes in the system “to let this not happen” to any daughter again.

“After seven years, Nirbhaya case convicts were hanged today. It’s a day to take a resolution that we will not allow another Nirbhaya case. Police, courts, state governments and the Centre should resolve to collectively remove loopholes in the system to let this not happen to any daughter,” he tweeted in Hindi. PTI

Nirbhaya can rest in peace: NCW chief

New Delhi: National Commission for Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma on Friday said Nirbhaya could finally rest in peace as she finally got justice, and hoped that the hanging of the four gang-rape and murder case convicts would act as a deterrent for others.

Sharma said the case had revealed loopholes in the legal system which the four convicts took advantage of.

“Hopefully Nirbhaya finally will rest at peace as she got justice. Her parents finally won undeterred fight for justice for their daughter after long legal battle. The four men are finally convicted and hanged this morning of the savage crime caused upon a young medical student,” Sharma said in a tweet.

“This case also showed us the loopholes of legal system, which the four convicts took advantage of. Today as we know that finally the convicts got hanged, I hope this will play as deterrent for others, and no such case in future should take this long to deliver justice,” she added. PTI
