New Delhi, February 17

Noting sending government officials to jail for contempt of court was not a solution, the SC on Thursday said it would hear petitions relating to vacancies in various tribunals.

“Should I call the government today itself and send them to jail? Will they then appoint people? Have some patience…I took this up yesterday and we will take it up,” a Bench led by CJI NV Ramana told an advocate after the latter mentioned the issue of vacancies in the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal. It said Attorney General KK Venugopal should be informed that the matter would be taken up for hearing on February 23. —
