India tops Covid recoveries, surpasses USA

India today overtook the US to become the top country in terms of Covid-19 recoveries with 42,08,431 discharges as against 53,08,014 total cases. India now accounts for close to 19 per cent of global recoveries and the national cure rate has improved to 79.28 per cent.

Today was also the first day in three months when daily new recoveries (95,880) surpassed daily new infections (93,337). The Health Ministry said 90 per cent new recovered cases came from 16 states, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Kerala, Assam and Bihar and the top five highest-burden states of Maharashtra, Andhra, Karnataka, UP and TN.

The government also reviewed oxygen availability in 12 high-burden states.


RS clears bill to punish those attacking doctors

The Rajya Sabha on Saturday passed a legislation that provides for up to seven years in jail for those attacking doctors and healthcare workers fighting the Covid-19 outbreak or during any situation akin to the current pandemic.
