India, Nepal begin military exercise

New Delhi, September 20

The two-week-long 15th India-Nepal combined battalion-level military training exercise “Surya Kiran” commenced at Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand on Monday. The exercise ends on October 3.

During the exercise, an infantry battalion each from the Indian Army and the Nepali army will be training together to develop inter-operability and share their experience of counter-terrorism and disaster relief operations. Around 650 defence personnel from both armies are participating in the event.

Meanwhile, the sixth edition of the SCO Exercise Peaceful Mission 2021 hosted by Russia started at the Orenburg Region of South West Russia today. An Indian military contingent, comprising an all arms combined force of 200 personnel from the Indian Army and Indian Air Force, is participating.

The aim of the exercise is to foster close relations among SCO member states and to enhance abilities of military leaders to command multi-national military contingents.

The opening ceremony commenced with an impressive parade by all participating contingents.

The exercise is based on joint counter-terrorism operations at operational and tactical level and all SCO member states are participating. Pakistan and China are also members of the SCO.
