Duty of school heads to teach dropped topics to pupils: Government

The government today said CBSE’s syllabus rationalisation for classes 9 to 12 was solely aimed at reducing the students’ stress and it would be the responsibility of school heads to see that the topics that have been dropped are taught.

“It would the responsibility of school heads and teachers to ensure that rationalised topics are explained to students to the extent required to connect different subjects. Rationalisation has been done to reduce the burden for annual exams in 2021 as there has been a loss of instruction time due to the pandemic,” HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal said today after experts questioned the deletion of some key concepts from the syllabus of classes 9 to 12.

Pokhriyal said students would not be tested on the reduced topics for internal assessment and yearend board examination but the CBSE had directed schools to follow NCERT Alternate Academic Calendar which covers all the topics that have been dropped.

“All topics being sensationalised to catch traction are covered in this calendar which has specific learning plans based on activity-based learning with the help of commonly available resources at homes,” said the minister.

Open school exams called off

New Delhi: The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) on Friday cancelled the March 2020 secondary and senior secondary course public exams which were earlier scheduled to be held on July 17 but later postponed. The NIOS said the exams had now been cancelled and for the purpose of assessment learners registered for the exam will be judged on the basis of their past performance. TNS

Cancel university exams: Rahul to UGC

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday urged the University Grants Commission (UGC) to cancel the varsity examinations and promote students on the basis of their past performances. “Covid has hurt so many people. Students in schools, colleges and universities are already suffering so much.
