Mandeep Kaur's death: Indian consulate in NYC extends assistance; FIR registered against husband, in-laws in UP

Expressing grief over the death of Mandeep Kaur, who allegedly died by suicide on August 3 citing years of abuse in a viral video, the Indian Consulate in New York said it would render all possible assistance in the matter.

“We are deeply saddened by the death of Mandeep Kaur in Queens, New York, under the most tragic circumstances. We are in touch with the US authorities at the Federal and local level as well as the community.

We stand ready to render all assistance,” the Consulate General of India tweeted even as the New York Police Department began a probe into the matter.

Back in UP’s Bijnor, victim’s sister Kuldeep Kaur said Mandeep had married Ranjotveer Singh Sandhu in February 2015, and moved to New York with him. “My sister was being tortured for not bearing a son. Her in-laws and husband also demanded Rs 50 lakh in dowry,” she alleged.

An FIR has been registered at Najibabad police station of Bijnor against Mandeep’s husband under Sections 306 (abetment to suicide), 498A (domestic abuse), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 342 (wrongful confinement) and various provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act, the police said.

Mandeep’s father Jaspal Singh said he had filed a complaint against Sandhu earlier also, but withdrew it after the latter pleaded forgiveness.

Prior to her death, Mandeep recorded a video narrating the agonising eight years of her married life in which she endured physical and mental abuse.
