New Delhi, July 3

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday dissolved all party units, from national to district level, including executive committees, in the wake of the recent Lok Sabha bypoll losses in Rampur and Azamgarh.

The decision

National president Akhilesh Yadav has dissolved the national, state and districts units of all party cells, including the youth and women wings, and has also disbanded the national, state and district executives.

The party’s youth and women’s wing also stand dissolved, setting the stage for a comprehensive overhaul. The party has, however, decided to continue with its Uttar Pradesh state unit chief Naresh Uttam. A party tweet said: “National president Akhilesh Yadav has dissolved the national, state and districts units of all party cells, including the youth and women wings, and has also disbanded the national, state and district executives.”

The dissolution of the units signal a massive internal reorganisation in the party, which had to bit dust in Rampur and Azamgarh Lok Sabha byelections, which were previously held by SP veteran Azam Khan and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, respectively. The twin losses came as a jolt to the SP, effectively ending the semblance of its revival as a major Opposition force against the ruling BJP.

In Azamgarh BJP’s Dinesh Yadav Nirhua won the election, whereas in Rampur BJP’s Ghanshyam Lodhi defeated the SP candidate. After losing the recent byelections, the SP is left with only three MPs in the Lok Sabha. The dissolution of organisational units is aimed at preparing for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, with the BJP aiming to better its performance beyond the current 66 MPs out of 80.
