New Delhi, July 27

AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh was on Wednesday suspended from the House for the remainder of the week for “unruly behaviour”.

The latest suspension came a day after 19 opposition MPs were suspended from Rajya Sabha for the rest of the week for disrupting the proceedings and two days after four Congress Lok Sabha MPs were suspended for the entire monsoon session (ending August 12) for holding placards inside the house despite warnings by Speaker Om Birla.

As soon as the Rajya Sabha resumed sitting on Wednesday for Question Hour after an adjournment forced by opposition MPs demanding discussion on price rise, the hooch tragedy in Gujarat, etc, Deputy Chairperson Harivansh set in motion the process of Sanjay Singh’s suspension.

“On Tuesday, when the House reassembled at 3.42pm, Sanjay Singh and some other members were at the well shouting slogans. While the chair requested the suspended members to withdraw from the chamber and other members to go back to their seats to enable the House to proceed with the listed business, Sanjay Singh tore up some papers and threw them towards the chair. His unruly behaviour is unbecoming for a member of the Rajya Sabha. Sanjay Singh has disregarded the authority of the chair and brought disrepute to the august house,” Harivansh said and asked for suspension of the AAP MP from the House for the remaining part of the week under Rule 256.

V Muraleedharan, MoS, Parliamentary Affairs, then moved a motion to suspend Sanjay Singh from the House for the remainder of the week. The motion was passed by voice vote.

Amid continued sloganeering by opposition members, the deputy chairman adjourned the House for 15 minutes. Protests continued when the House resumed sitting forcing the deputy chairman to adjourn it till 2pm.
