Chandigarh, January 20

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) is planning to appoint a consultant to change the city’s old sewer and storm water line.

The MCwill seek funds from the Centre under the AMRUT scheme for the same. The agenda will be taken up in the MC House meeting for approval tomorrow.

With the passage of time and due to increase in population, the sewage system of Chandigarh has outlived its life. City residents are facing problems due to frequent blockage of sewage lines. As far as the storm drainage system is concerned, due to increase in run-off, the carrying capacity of storm water is also found to be insufficient, which often result in waterlogging during the rainy season.

The present system is insufficient to cope with the present run-off, which has increased due to continuous concrete in pavements and open areas.

“The old sewer and storm water lines will be replaced and if required, we will retain some based on the report of the consultant. The budget. It will be calculated by the consultant,” an official said.

The MC may also pull in funds from water tariffs in the near future. — TNS
