Man posing as cop sent to four-day police custody

The Patiala police today produced a man identified as Harinder Singh in a local court in a case of duping Rs 5 lakh from a city resident. He was posing as a cop.

The police officers sought a 10-day police remand but the court decided to send him in police custody for four days.

Sadar police SHO Bikkar Singh Sohi said the accused was produced in the court in matter of duping residents of Rs 5 lakh and the remand was obtained. The accused has already been in police remand in another such case of duping another resident of Rs 6 lakh.

The accused used to flaunt his security cover and proximity to police officers by introducing himself as a sub-inspector and dupe youth on the pretext of providing them job in the police department. He is also facing charges for having duped money from two police persons for getting their family members recruited in police in the same manner.

DGP Dinkar Gupta had formed a special investigation team (SIT) comprising an IG and SSPs of various districts to probe his links within the department.

In one of the cases registered in Patiala on the complaint of Seema, Harinder, allegedly, took Rs 6.80 lakh to get her recruited as constable. He even issued her a fake appointment letter.

In another case against the accused and his wife Navdeep Kaur, complainant Lovely Kumar alleged that the duo took Rs 6 lakh to get him recruited as constable.

He too was given a fake joining letter. He is also facing charges of having duped people of over Rs 50 lakh in various districts on pretext of getting them recruited in police.
