Six jawans of the Railway Protection Force posted here and a woman tested positive for Covid in the district today. The woman (28), a resident of Gurpal Nagar, came back from Delhi on May 18.

The RPF jawans belong to Jammu, Kangra, Karnal, Sonepat and Faridabad. Nine RPF jawans posted here have tested positive. Earlier, 48 jawans of the force, who were part of a battalion shifted here from Delhi to ensure smooth running of trains carrying migrants back home, had tested positive for Covid.

NRIs refuse to share room, high drama at PAU

Meanwhile, high drama was witnessed at Parker House at PAU after NRIs brought here from Dubai refused to share rooms. A few NRIs from Malaysia were today bought at Parker House and a request was made to the Dubai-returnees to share five rooms with 10 persons. They turned down the request and came out of their rooms in protest. They said they had already tested negative and spent nine days here. At this juncture, they are being told to share the rooms to which they will not agree.

After they refused to share the rooms, they were asked to pay Rs 1,000 for single occupancy and were even shown the rates displayed on the notice board. The NRIs from Dubai argued that had they known that they had to pay Rs 1,000 per day, they would have booked a hotel room which cost Rs 1,300 per day.

“We were told that we have to pay Rs 500 for single occupancy at Parker House and Rs 300 at Kairon Kissan Ghar, both located at PAU, and we opted for Parker House. But nobody told us that we will have to share rooms,” said another NRI.

Teachers resent poor arrangements

A meeting of teachers was convened on Friday for which they were informed around 10 pm last night on WhatsApp. They were asked to reach the Zone A office of the MC at 8 am where they were assigned duties to facilitate migrants’ return to their home states. Six teachers belong to Haryana, Sangrur and Mansa and it took them four or five hours to reach Ludhiana. They alleged they were not attended to by any official till 1 pm and were made to sit in a room where no social distancing was maintained.
