Winter school on AI for water management concludes

The ongoing ICAR sponsored 21-day winter school on ‘Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Water Resource Management in Agriculture,’ organised by the Department of Soil and Water Engineering, concluded at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today.

This winter school covered several lectures on the emerging topic of artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, and their applications in water resource management, especially, in agricultural domain.

Dr Ajmer Singh Dhatt, Director of Research, PAU, who was the chief guest at the valedictory function, highlighted the pros and cons of the AI technology, and stressed on using it wisely in the respective domains. He also focused towards sensitising the local community and the farmers about the latest technological advancements that were happening in the agricultural space.

The guest of honour Dr Nachiket Kotwaliwale, director, ICAR-CIPHET, Ludhiana, emphasised on the use of AI as a tool, the accuracy of which depended on the data that was provided to the model. Therefore, special efforts should be directed towards obtaining high quality data in huge amounts, he observed.

Dr Manjeet Singh, dean, College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, who was also the guest of honour, suggested the participants to utilise the freely available softwares as an initial step towards their journey to explore AI. The participants should be creative in their approach and ideas, and think beyond as to what can be achieved through these AI algorithms, he advised.
