‘Welcome Life’ to help students beat stress: Teachers

Subject aimed to infuse positivity among pupils, make them ready to face challenges of life

‘Welcome Life’, the new subject being introduced by the Punjab School Education Board, if implemented in letter and in spirit, is expected to prepare students for better disposition and handling adverse circumstances in their life.

Topics such as eating habits, time management, healthy family relations, good touch and bad touch, each one plant one, be aware of superstitions, cooperation and relationship, dignity of national symbols, empathy, self-discipline, rational thinking, personal relations, sympathy and support, constructive thinking, balanced psychological development, decision-making, solving problems, impressive communication and stress management would be taught to students of Classes VI onwards.

Sympathy, problem solving part of syllabus

  • To prepare students for better disposition and handling adverse circumstances in their life, topics such as eating habits, time management, healthy family relations, good touch and bad touch, each one plant one, dignity of national symbols, empathy, self-discipline, sympathy and support, constructive thinking, balanced psychological development, decision-making, solving problems, communication and stress management will be taught to students of Class VI onwards.

Authorities at government and private aided schools of the area have started adjusting time table for various classes so as to allocate at least one period weekly for the subject.

Perusal of a communiqué issued by the director, State Council of Educational Research and Training, revealed that heads of various schools had been advised to implement timetable rescheduled to facilitate teaching of elements of lifestyle in three wings; 6th-8th, 9th-10th and 11th-12th.

Appreciating the initiative, Davinder Singh, principal, Government Senior Secondary School, Maherna Kalan, said it would enable the outgoing students to compete with their counterparts from other states in national and international competitions.

Viney Kumar, principal, MGMN Senior Secondary School, said teachers concerned have started preparing theoretical and practical reading material to make the classes more interactive and lively.

Dr Anshu Gupta, a senior psychiatrist consultant, said the introduction of the subject was much needed for students as it would help solve varied types of issues of pupils. “Topics such as time management, good touch bad touch, stress management, balanced psychological development and solving problems will enable students manage adverse circumstances efficiently,” said Dr Gupta.
