Ludhiana, July 9

Waterlogging was again witnessed in parts of the city after 22.4-mm rainfall today. Residents as well as commuters had a tough time crossing waterlogged areas.

Severe waterlogging was reported near Clock Tower, Hambran Road, Durgi Road, Gill Road, Link Road, NH-44, Rajguru Nagar Road, Chandigarh Road, Dhandari, Ferozepur Road, near Feroze Gandhi Market, dairy complexes and in old city areas. A number of vehicles broke down on waterlogged roads.

The road gullies in most areas were lying choked. A resident of Maleri Gali complained to the MC flood control room about a choked road gully which was later cleaned, according to an MC official.

Storm-sewer system in only 11% area

About 89% city areas lack storm-sewer system. The existing sewer system at a number of locations gets choked whenever it rains. The MC had earlier planned for installation of storm-sewer system in the entire city, but the project could not start due to the fund crunch, according to sources.

The MC Superintending Engineer, Ravinder Garg, said they had deployed staff to ensure removal of rainwater from Hambran Road and other areas. They would make a proposal to address the problem of waterlogging on Panj Peer Road too, he added.
