Covid-19 virus more infectious, but less virulent, says doctor

Covid-19 cases in the region are again rising and increased mobility due to summer vacations, eased travel restrictions and opening of borders has been the major causes behind the spread of the virus among vulnerable individuals.

Geographically, it is almost following the previous trend. Cases first start rising in Maharashtra followed by Delhi and then Punjab.

“The virus is more infectious and less virulent. Recent data shows previous strains have caused long term effects on various systems of the body, including neurological. However, long-term data of the present virus is not there,” said Dr Bishav Mohan, medical superintendent, Hero DMC Heart Institute.

Taking precautions was important and wearing mask was the most effective way to prevent the virus. People should isolate themselves when they come to know about their positive status, he said.

Dr Mohan said main things to keep in mind if one becomes positive were isolation, rest and hydration. Symptomatic patients should have treatment but avoid antibiotics and steroids. Nutritional supplements have not shown any benefits, he said.

“Complacency has set in among people as they fail to adopt Covid-appropriate behaviour. Some have even missed their second dose of vaccination. The virus is here and the people should not be careless about it. They should keep following necessary precautions,” said Civil Surgeon SP Singh.

16 more test positive in dist

Meanwhile, a total of 16 persons have tested positive for Covid in the district on Sunday.

A total of 11,0,516 have tested positive and a total of 2,293 persons have lost their lives to the deadly virus since March 2020 in the district.

Today, there were 189 active cases, of which 183 have been asked to isolate themselves in their homes while six are admitted to private hospitals. The recovery rate of Covid patients has gone down to 97.75 per cent. Till date, a total of 37,10,190 samples have been taken, of which 35,84,840 were found negative. Samples of 4,083 suspected patients were sent for testing today, the results of which are expected shortly.
