Ludhiana, October 22

The police claim to have busted a gang of vehicle lifters and recovered 18 vehicles from them. The gang belongs to Ferozepur and its members especially chose Ludhiana to steal vehicles.

The Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP), City, Bhagirath Meena, the Additional DCP-III, Sameer Verma, and the ACP, Jatinder Kumar, addressed a press conference regarding the matter today.

The arrested suspect has been identified as Gulshan Singh (24), a resident of Rayian Wala, Ferozepur. One of his accomplices has been identified as Ranjit Singh Rana of Ferozepur.

The JCP said 18 motorcycles, including two Bullet motorcycles and three Activa scooters were recovered from the suspect. All vehicles were stolen from the industrial hub, the JCP added.

Key suspect Gulshan was earlier working as motorcycle mechanic, the JCP said. After he and his friend started taking drugs, they decided to form a gang of vehicle lifters, the JCP added.

Recently, the suspects had stolen a Bullet motorcycle from Ludhiana and their act was captured in the CCTV cameras, the JCP said. Later, when the police started a probe, the suspects were identified, the JCP added. The suspect was arrested by the police Division No. 5 from Gurdev Nagar, the JCP said.

The suspects had committed vehicle thefts in Ferozepur and Moga also, but recently they were active in Ludhiana, the JCP added. They used to come to Ludhiana on motorcycle and after finding a soft target open lock of the vehicle with a master key, the JCP said.

Gulshan had a notorious past as he was already facing cases of drug trafficking, theft and liquor peddling, the JCP added.

ADCP Verma said the suspects had also sold stolen vehicles to people in the rural areas of Moga and Ferozepur. Probe was on to trace those vehicles, the ADCP added.

Fake numbers plates were affixed on most stolen vehicles, the ADCP said. Now, the police would find real owners of these vehicles from engine and chassis numbers so that these could be handed over to them, the ADCP added.
