Two arrested for liquor smuggling

Ludhiana: The police nabbed Kulwinder Singh, a resident of Aman Nagar, while he was waiting for customers to sell smuggled liquor in a vacant plot at Aman Nagar. The police recovered 30 quarters and 49 bottles of whisky from him and registered a case under sections 61/1/14 of the Excise Act against him. Jasvir Kumar of New Subhash Nagar on Tibba Road was arrested after the police recovered 23 bottles of liquor from his possession in a vacant plot near his house. In yet another raid, the police booked Lovely Kumar of Sardar Nagar, Basti Jodhewal, after he was caught selling liquor behind Civil Hospital. He, however, escaped during the raid. The police seized two cases whisky and 52 quarters from the spot. OC

Four held for gambling

Ludhiana: The police have arrested four persons and booked five others under sections 269 and 270 of the IPC, sections 13/3/67 of the Gambling Act and 54 of the Disaster Management Act after they were caught playing cards on the roof top of a house in Street No. 7, Shimlapuri, in violation of prohibitory orders and curfew. They have been identified as Varun Kumar, alias Tinda, Ajay Pal Singh, Ravi Kumar and Piara Lal. Sunil Kumar, alias Doda, owner of the house, along with Jajji, Amit, Bola and Goldy escaped. The police seized Rs 32,370 and a pack of cards from the spot. OC

Samples collected from Sewage plant

Ludhiana: A team of the Punjab Pollution Control Board and the Municipal Corporation visited Jamalpur Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and collected water samples. Senior Environmental Engineer Sandeep Bahl and MC’s Superintending Engineer Rajinder Singh were present when samples were collected. “We visited the Jamalpur STP today to verify the effect of poly aluminum chloride (PAC) on domestic effluent and desilting of Budha Nallah. We also collected effluent samples before and after the addition of PAC in the presence of the superintending engineer. These samples have been sent to a zonal lab for analysis,” said Sandeep Bahl.
