Training on artificial insemination in pigs

Ludhiana, July 20

A training course on artificial insemination in pigs was organised by the Directorate of Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), here, for pig farmers.

In the wake of Covid and keeping in mind social distancing, a batch of only four pig farmers of Ludhiana district was selected for the training. The training aimed to provide practical knowledge and hands-on training through lectures and demonstrations regarding artificial insemination, heat detection, semen handling, and oestrous cycle, breeding soundness, breeds and importance of back fat thickness and lean meat in pigs.

Dr Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor, GADVASU, congratulated all for successful completion of the event.

He said for fast propagation of good germ plasm, AI was the answer and it was a technique which every pig farmer should skill to do insemination at his level as it has an advantage of economical, introduction of elite germ plasm and controlling inbreeding.

A quarterly digital newsletter of GADVASU, ‘Pashu Palan Sunehe’, initiated by the Directorate of Extension, was also released by the Vice-Chancellor.
