Ludhiana, December 8

Traffic police personnel and employees of the Municipal Corporation faced a protest by shopkeepers during an anti-encroachment drive in the old city area here today.

The campaign was started from the Rekhi Cinema chowk from where the team seized goods of shopkeepers and roadside vendors that were lying on the road, creating hurdles in smooth flow of traffic.

When the team reached Chaura Bazaar, the shopkeepers cornered vehicles of the MC and the police. Heated arguments were exchanged between the officials and shopkeepers.

After coming to know about the matter, Senior Deputy Mayor Sham Sundar Malhotra reached the spot and calmed down the shopkeepers. The latter said their goods were not creating any traffic hurdle on the road rather some people wrongly park vehicles which actually causes traffic jams.

Malhotra urged the police and MC staff that instead of taking action against the shopkeepers, an awareness campaign should be launched so that the traders should follow the norms. Afterwards, the police had to stop the anti-encroachment drive.
