Three booked for insurance online fraud in Ludhiana

The Cyber Wing of the Ludhiana police has booked three persons Mohd Shariq and Vinod of Uttar Pradesh and Noor Mohamad of Jharkhand who had allegedly duped a city resident of Rs3.15 lakh on the promise of releasing her insurance policy amount.

ADCP (Crime) Rupinder Kaur Bhatti said one Kiran Chopra had gone to encash her insurance policy from the office of MetLife Insurance, but insurance employees told her to call on the toll-free number as the claim would be processed online due to Covid restrictions. After a few days, when the woman called on the toll-free number, she got a call from an unknown number that gave her a weblink. For releasing maturity amount of her policy, the caller asked for the OTPs the woman had received on her mobile. The woman shared the OTPs and Rs3.15 lakh got withdrawn from her bank account. The ADCP said the three persons behind the fraudulent withdrawal of the amount were yet to be arrested. — TNS
