Shots fired at trader’s house in Ludhiana

An atmosphere of fear was created at Prem Nagar locality in Civil Lines here last night when two persons, riding an SUV, fired shots at the house of Yogesh Maini, a hosiery trader and social worker. Before firing indiscriminately from a supposedly .32-bore weapon, the two assailants, identified as Mohit Sahni and Honey Sahota, hurled abuses and threatened the victim with dire consequences.

Division No. 8 SHO Jarnail Singh, who rushed to the spot on getting information of the incident, said the police had recovered two spent cartridges from the spot and CCTV footage of the cameras installed in the vicinity was being checked to establish the identity of the perpetrators of the crime. However, a case under Sections 336 and 506 of the IPC and Section 27 of the Arms Act has already been registered against the duo.

Giving details of the incident, Yogesh said he suspected the hand of the area councillor’s husband behind the pre-planned attack on him. He asserted that even though he was not an activist of any particular political party but the Congress councillor of the area and her supporters were nursing a grudge against him for his work as a volunteer with the city police during the initial period of Covid-19 lockdown.

Maini claimed that his neighbours had warned him against an attempt on his life after he filed a complaint followed by a writ in the Punjab and Haryana High Court against an allegedly illegal construction of a hotel building of the the Congress councillor’s husband in residential locality.

He further said the two prime accused named in the FIR were already facing charges for committing heinous crimes such as murder and attempt to murder.
