Ludhiana, August 12

Fulfilling a long-pending demand of Muslims, Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu today laid the foundation stone of development works worth Rs 38.93 lakh at the Sherpur burial ground. The money would be used to build a boundary wall, rooms and to maintain the graveyard.

The Mayor was accompanied by Punjab Backward Classes Land Development and Finance Corporation (Backfinco) vice-chairman Mohammad Gulab. He said the Muslim community in Sherpur, Dhandari, Focal Point and surrounding areas had been seeking infrastructure upgrade of the burial place for several years, following which he had taken up the matter with Cabinet Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu, MP Ravneet Singh Bittu and the Mayor for financial assistance. —TNS
