Officials of the civic bodies of the region continued a campaign to spread awareness about the causes and consequences of environmental pollution caused due to the use of single-use plastic.

Besides organising workshops and seminars on solid waste management with intent to sensitise sanitation workers and residents, officials undertook door-to-door campaigns to caution people against violation of instructions.

Ahmedgarh SDM Harbans Singh and Raikot SDM Gurbir Singh Kohli said officials led by EOs Chander Prakash Wadhwa and Amrinder Singh had launched a coordinated movement to sensitise residents regarding the implementation of latest guidelines.

Sanitation workers, councillors and residents were updated about segregation of solid waste before disposal and other elements of Swachh Bharat Mission, besides the latest guidelines of the NGT, claimed Harbans Singh and Gurbir Singh Kohli.

Wadhwa said majority of owners and managers of grocery shops, vends, restaurants and commercial establishments had started cooperating with the administration by either persuading their clients to bring cloth bags and reusable containers or supply goods in biodegradable bags. “Initially, we have deployed our personnel to get orders implemented by persuading stakeholders. We will be forced to take punitive action in case of willful default,” said Wadhwa.
