Repair potholes: NGO to Ludhiana MC

An NGO has written a letter to the MC Commissioner about the potholes causing accidents in the city.

Kamaljeet Soi, chairman, Raahat-The Safe Community Foundation, said a “killer” pothole on the Model Town main road near Suman Hospital had recently caused a mishap and serious head injuries to a girl admitted in a hospital.

He mentioned the bad condition of many city roads and requested the MC chief to take corrective steps to ensure the safety of the commuters.

Soi said, “There have been many instances where people have been seriously injured and had even died due to potholes created by poor road infrastructure in Ludhiana. This deadly problem is being ignored and neglected for a long time, leading to many fatal accidents. Potholes are not visible at night due to the poor lighting system, resulting in the city becoming highly accident prone,” he said.

“As per the amended Motor Vehicles Act, 2019, the municipal authorities, contractor, consultant or concessionaire should be held responsible and a compensation of Rs 1 lakh should be paid to the victim,” he said.

Soi appealed to the Commissioner to get all potholes repaired in the city and initiate action against the officials and contractors for poor road construction, laying and maintenance of the roads. He said warning and cautionary signs were missing at most of the roads and these should be installed immediately so that no deadly accident happened. He also demanded that steps should be taken to remove the black spots.
