Rain exposes Ludhiana MC's preparedness

Tall claims of the Municipal Corporation of making required arrangements for the rainy season have fallen flat after waterlogging occurred in different areas as rains lashed the city on Friday.

The waterlogging caused inconveniences to commuters at Samrala Chowk, RK Road, Moti Nagar, Model Town, Panj Peer Road, Chandigarh Road, Dholewal, Dhandari Khurd and several other areas of the city. The pedestrians and commuters were seen struggling while passing through accumulated water.

Notably, MC officials had recently claimed that 90 per cent of road gullies in the city have been cleaned in view of the upcoming rainy season. But, road gullies were still choked in different areas.

Residents of Panj Peer Road faced a harrowing time once again due to waterlogging. The MC has failed to find out a permanent solution to the sewerage-related problems on this road falling under Ward No. 78.

A resident, Pankaj Prabhakar, said, “As the rain started, the sewers started overflowing badly, flooding the Panj Peer Road. It was difficult for the residents to step out of their houses.”

The sewers overflowed in Moti Nagar and Dhandari Khurd areas too during the rainfall. MC's Superintending Engineer (O&M branch), Rajinder Singh said the situation was under control in the city. He said all staff and officials concerned were deployed in the field to avoid waterlogging.

Ensure removal of silt from Buddha Nullah: MC chief

MC Commissioner Shena Aggarwal on Friday inspected Buddha Nullah and various areas of Ludhiana East, West, North and Central constituencies. She instructed the officials to ensure the cleaning of areas under the bridges and removal of silt from Buddha Nullah.

Aggarwal, along with MLA Gurpreet Gogi and officials, inspected different areas. She checked arrangements at Model Town, Malhar Road, BRS Nagar, Ghumar Mandi, Dholewal, Miller Ganj, Sherpur Chowk to Vishwakarma Chowk road, Damoria Bridge and other areas.

Traffic comes to a halt

A brief spell of rain in city slowed down the traffic at the various intersections and on several roads in the city. At some places, traffic jams caused huge inconvenience to the commuters. Roads remained choked at places such as Samrala Chowk, Gill Road, Model Town, Panj Peer Road, Hambran Road, Aarti Chowk, Chandar Nagar etc.
