Ludhiana, July 21

The current spell of rain in Ludhiana has proved to be a boon for farmers. “The weather is expected to remain cloudy with possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall over Ludhiana and its adjoining areas,” said Dr Pavneet Kaur Kingra, Head, Department of Climate Change and Agricultural Meteorology.

Adding further Dr Kingra said rainfall will prove beneficial for crops as paddy season is going in and it is in its initial stages and requires water.

Gurbir Singh, a farmer from Samrala, said: “Now ,there is no fear of bad crop due to intense heatwave and we are hopeful of a bumper crop this time,” he said.

Although monsoon is a favourable season for fish farming, smart water management skills are required to avert any unforeseen damage to fish ponds and loss of fish stock.

Dr Meera D Ansal, Dean, College of Fisheries, GADVASU, advised to keep the pond dykes planted with grass to check erosion, However, in case water becomes muddy due to erosion, apply limestone in accordance with water pH. She advised to leave about 2 feet of free board over the water surface for accommodating rain water and preventing overflow.

Dr Naveen Aggarwal, entomology expert, PAU, cautioned the maize growers against the attack of Fall Army Worm (FAW) in maize crop. He stressed upon the farmers to contact the PAU experts in case of the incidence of any pest/weed and follow recommended management strategies.
