The commuters are a harried lot as the Sua road, opposite Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, is badly broken at various points.
The road links the Gill Road with Dugri village.
After the last rainy season, the size of the potholes has increased, but the civic body has failed to attend to the problem. Many residents have demanded the early re-carpeting of the road from the MC.
A resident of Gill Road, Simarjeet Singh, said he had been witnessing the poor condition of the road for a long time. He said when vehicles pass over the deep potholes, the chances of damage to vehicles remain high. Moreover, the potholed road could cause back problems to many. I don’t understand when any pothole appears, why does the civic body keep delaying the repair work? The road should be repaired or re-carpeted at the earliest.
An RTI activist, Kuldeep Singh Khaira, said it was the responsibility of the civic body to ensure the timely repair of all broken roads in the city. The MC should take the required measures to ensure the repair of the Sua road at the earliest.
The MC recently laid patches in an improper manner on Gill Road. The stretch where the patch work was done is not levelled. The officials concerned should remain present on spot whenever any road is constructed, carpeted or repaired, he said.
Councillor from ward No. 34, Rakhwinder Singh Gabria, said the Sua road was earlier carpeted around four-five years ago. He said, “The tenders at an estimated cost of Rs 52 lakh have already been floated to re-carpet the road. The road work is likely to be started before the end of this month.”
B&R SDO at the MC’s Zone C, Rakesh Singla, said the work order would be issued to the contractor concerned who had placed the successful bid next week. Once the work order was issued, the road work would be started soon.
