Ludhiana, August 21

With people throwing all caution to the wind, many areas in Ludhiana are fast becoming a breeding ground for the pandemic. "I fail to understand why the people do not maintain physical distancing at the public places. Worse still, spitting on roads is a second nature to many grown-ups who have no qualms about it," says 70-year-old Mohinder Singh.

Maintaining physical distancing and avoiding unnecessary visits to the public places, are two basic precautions, apart from hand hygiene and respiratory hygiene. However, in many areas of Ludhiana the people are flouting all rules and exposing themselves as well as others to the pandemic.

"I have noticed that youngsters make groups and assemble in public places to gossip and while away their time. I have seen this particularly in Ranchi Colony and areas adjacent to it that are very near to our own locality," says Mewa Singh Gujjarwal from Khanna Colony. He laments that semi-urban areas like the Ranchi Colony remain neglected. "There is a dire need for creating awareness among the people about the pandemic. How it is spread, the precautions that need to be taken and the rules that have to be followed," Gujjarwal adds.

Creating awareness and also taking action against those flouting the pandemic-related precautions are imperative, says another resident. Patrolling by the police will act as a deterrent, adds the resident.
