Reappear candidates seemed to have heaved a sigh of relief as Panjab University has allowed them to take admission to higher courses.

The university has decided that a candidate who had appeared under the semester system for undergraduate courses and has two reappears in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th semesters can take admission to MA/MSc/MSc/postgraduate diploma for the session 2021-22.

Firstly, all admissions to MA/MSc/postgraduate diploma courses, for which admissions are not based on CET/ OCET 2021, will be exclusively on the basis of merit scores of applicants. Principals can, however, provisionally admit students to the 1st year of MA/MSc/postgraduate diploma courses under the semester system who have reappear in two subjects of BA/BSc/3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th semester examinations conducted by Panjab University only if seats remain vacant after exhausting the merit list applicants.

A candidate, who had to reappear for a subject, said she had never thought that she would ever get a reappear.

“My paper went off well but I was astonished to see the results. I thought I would have to waste one complete year in preparing for the lone subject for which I have to reappear. But now, as the university has allowed admission to MA, I am relieved since I am able to pursue my masters alongside,” she said.

Another student who got a reappear due to ill-health said: “I was well with my studies in the beginning of the semester. Later, my father tested positive for Covid and the infection spread to all members of the family. It took at least three months for all of us to return to normal due to which my time was wasted. My studies were affected and I got a reappear. I was in a fix as to what I should do as I would have to wait for one complete year. But as the university has given us a chance, I can clear my first year of masters as well as the subject in which I got the reappear.”

Panjab University Senator Inderpal Singh Sidhu said it would save one precious year of such students who have been caught up in a tight situation due to reappears.

“But whatever the situation may be, such candidates admitted to the first year, will not be promoted to the 3rd semester of MA/MSc if he /she fails to clear the reappearing subject of the undergraduate course. Postgraduate diploma will only be awarded to such candidates who qualify all papers of the BA/BSc examinations in which he/she was placed as reappear,” he said.
