Now, violators of curfew orders to be put in lockup

The police have come up with a novel idea to teach a lesson to violators of curfew orders. Now, violators will be put in the lockup of the police stations concerned.

Earlier, the Police Department had decided to build a temporary jail for such violators, but later the idea was dropped citing the requirement of infrastructure, including sanitation facilities, etc.

Police need helping hands from public

The Ludhiana police have put up a post on its official Facebook page and Twitter handle which states that “During this curfew time in Ludhiana, we request people to help us as traffic marshals to regulate traffic, as curfew-enforcement officers, door-to-door delivery executive, and for door-to-door supply of cooked food, etc, to economically weak sections of society. “At present, we have around 700 such volunteers. We need to enrol more volunteers. We need at least 8-10 volunteers per mohalla. If you want to work in such testing times, if you are below 50 years of age and are healthy, then you can help and join us. “We have strictly imposed curfew in each nook and corner of the city where our police personnel and traffic marshals are discharging duties round the clock. We have lenient approach toward people who are out for some emergency but many people are still roaming on roads without purpose. Now onwards, such persons will be put behind in the lockups at police stations for a few hours, so that they can be taught a lesson,” Commissioner of Police Rakesh Agrawal.

Agrawal said he had also told his team not to beat anyone with lathis and if people indulged in arguments or any scuffle with them at nakas, straightway register an FIR under the relevant sections of the IPC against them. Notably, the CP had also released an audio message for the police force in which he had asked the police force to restrain from beating people found roaming on road as it dented the image of the police department.

The police also urged the people to call at 112 for any kind of assistance during curfew.
