Ludhiana, January 11

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued a notice to several respondents in the matter pertaining to solid waste ‘mismanagement’ in Ludhiana and the poor condition of the pond at Gill village. The matter was heard by the NGT recently. After filing of objections by the applicants against a report submitted by a joint committee, the tribunal issued the notice.

The applicants — Kapil Arora and Kuldeep Singh Khaira — said the respondents in the case are the DC, MC, GLADA and PPCB.

Arora and Khaira said that after filing of a petition against the poor condition of the pond in Gill as well as dumping of garbage on the roadsides at many locations in Ludhiana, the NGT had constituted a committee to look into the matter. The applicants alleged that the committee, instead of depicting the true state of affairs, submitted an ‘incorrect’ report, saying that garbage dumped by the roadside and in open plots had been cleared at locations such as Model Town Extension, Bajwa Nagar, Jawahar Nagar Camp, and SBS Nagar.

The applicants said despite the NGT orders, static waste compactors are yet to be installed in the sheds constructed by the MC and that garbage is still being dumped outside such structures or by the roadside.

Arora said, “After going through the report of the committee, we filed the objections by attaching the latest photographs. From the photographs as well as actual conditions at sites, it is clear that nothing has been done by the respondents. So, we have requested the NGT Bench to take action for their act of submitting a false report.”

The next date of hearing is March 4.
