National games: Punjab lift overall trophy in wushu

Ludhiana, December 24

Hosts Punjab bagged overall trophy in wushu event besides emerging champions in netball in the boys as well as girls sections in the 65th National School Games that concluded here today.

Competition in three games — netball, wushu and sepak takraw — was organised in Ludhiana whereas kick-boxing matches were held at Sangrur during the six-day games in which around 1,000 players (boys and girls) vied for top honours.

Government Model Senior Secondary School, Punjab Agricultural University, and BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, played hosts of these games in Ludhiana. The prize distribution function was held at Guru Nanak Public School, Sarabha Nagar.

Punjab players stamped their supremacy in the game of wushu as they secured maximum medals to clinch the overall trophy.

On the final day, in the boys’ section, Punjab annexed gold medal while Delhi finished at second place whereas Maharashtra secured third position.

In the girls’ section, Punjab came out triumphant and Maharashtra secured second position while Rajasthan and Kerala shared third place.

In sepak takraw (boys), Gujrat won the title, while Punjab and Andhra Pradesh finished at the second and third place, respectively, and Telangana had to content with fourth position.

Similarly, in the girls’ category (sepak takraw), Andhra Pradesh emerged winners. Gujarat secured second position while Maharashtra and Telangana finished at third and fourth spot, respectively.

In netball (boys), Punjab beat Delhi 12-9 to annex the title while Chhattisgarh and IPSC finished at third and fourth place, respectively, whereas in the girls’ section, Punjab defeated Chhattisgarh 22-17 to come out as champions. Delhi and Kerala secured third and fourth positions, respectively.

Rupinder Ravi, state organizer, and Swaranjit Kaur, District Education Officer, along with Sanjay Gautam, Kuldeep Misra and Dherender Kumar from the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) gave away prizes to the winners.

Ashish Kumar, Gurkirpal Singh, Kuldeep Singh, Parvinder Kaur and Ajit Pal Singh were among other dignitaries present on this occasion.
