Ludhiana, July 29

A meeting was held between officials of the Municipal Corporation (MC) and dairy owners to discuss shifting of dairies from the city areas to outside the civic body’s jurisdiction here on Wednesday.

MC chief Pardeep Kumar Sabharwal presided over the meeting.

Once again, the MC is planning to shift over 500 dairies outside its limits. Dairy owners are ready to shift, but want appropriate space and facilities for the waste disposal so that they can run their businesses without any inconvenience.

There are over 500 dairies in dairy complexes on the Tajpur and Hambran roads. The untreated waste from dairies is dumped into Buddha Nullah. Besides, there are a number of scattered dairies in the city. The MC has been planning to shift dairies for a long time, but it is yet to see the light of day.

DS Oberoi, president, Tajpur Road Dairy Complex Association, said, “We want dairies to be shifted within distance of 10 km from the existing dairy complexes. All required facilities must be ensured for dairies. A facility for the proper disposal of waste must be ensured wherever dairies are shifted.”

It is required to mention that the Punjab Government has already approved Rs650-crore project for rejuvenation of the Budha Nullah.

A meeting of special task force (STF) is likely to be held to discuss proposed rejuvenation of the Buddha Nullah project.
