Mandi Ahmedgarh, June 20

Five youths from neighbouring villages posing as gazetted and other rank police officers were found patrolling in an SUV bearing Punjab Police logo on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.

A police team, led by SHO Chhapar Chowki Sukhminder Singh Bhundri, arrested them before they could dupe or extort money from villagers on one pretext or the other.

The suspects, wearing uniforms of DSP, sub-inspectors and constables, have been identified as Harkamal Singh of Jodhan village, Kulvir Singh of Bhaini Baringa, Jasmandeep Singh of Lehra village, all from Ludhiana district, Gurpreet Singh of Manvi village and Livtar Singh of Manvi village, both from Malerkotla district.

Though the police were informed that the suspects had shown identity cards and appointment letters to prove their genuineness before residents, the police are yet to recover fake testimonials and IDs from their possession.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Dakha Jatinderjit Singh said a patrolling party, led by SHO Chhapar Chowki Sukhminder Singh Bhundri, got information about the suspicious activities of the SUV-borne occupants, who were posing as police personnel of various ranks.

The police nabbed the suspects after a brief chase near Jurahan and Phallewal villages. They have been sent to four-day police remand.
