Ludhiana MC told to submit plan for remediation of legacy waste

A team of the NGT Monitoring Committee has given instructions to the local Municipal Corporation to ensure implementation of the solid waste management rules and start process for remediation of legacy waste site on Tajpur Road. The team, led by committee chairman Justice Jasbir Singh, also visited the MC landfill site on Tajpur Road.

The team of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), headed by Justice Jasbir Singh, Chairman, NGT Monitoring Committee for rivers Sutlej and Beas, and comprising SC Aggarwal, Chief Secretary (retd) of Punjab and senior member of NGT Monitoring Committee for rivers Sutlej and Beas, today reviewed the measures being undertaken by various government departments as well as other stakeholders in saving our environment.

Ensure door-to-door collection of waste

A source, who attended the review meeting at the Circuit House, said the civic body had been directed to ensure segregation of waste in a right manner and door-to-door collection of waste. It has been suggested that the civic body can take police support for implementation of door-to-door collection, the source said.

The deadline for implementation of solid waste management rules is March 31. If the rules are not implemented, compensation charges as per the orders of the NGT would be imposed from April 1.

Focus on waste management in city, A2Z firm told

It was learnt that the A2Z group has been given instructions not to lift the bulk waste being generated by the establishments outside the MC limits and pay proper attention to solid waste management in the city. The team has given instructions to the civic body to ensure an early construction of carcass utilisation plant.

Justice Jasbir Singh said the main aim of today’s visit was to review the progress of works reviewed during the meeting held in November 2019. He showed satisfaction over the ongoing works, but at the same time stressed that further improvement was expected.

Justice Jasbir Singh said the civic body had assured that a plan for remediation of legacy waste would be prepared in a month. Officials were sensitised to the deadlines of all ongoing works and were directed to follow these deadlines strictly as no lapse would be tolerated by the NGT.

He urged the city residents to join hands and build a mass movement for saving our environment. He said to ensure proper coordination among the government departments, the Deputy Commissioner of Ludhiana has been appointed head of the district-level Environment Committee as well as the NGT task force. The Deputy Commissioner has been reviewing the progress of all tasks undertaken in this regard on a monthly basis. He said the NGT was committed to ensuring that Buddha Nullah became clean soon.
