Legislator honours sanitation workers

Payal legislator Lakhvir Singh Lakha has come to the support of sanitation workers of urban local bodies of the region, who have been fighting on the frontline in the fight against the spread of Covid-19 without adequate protective equipment.

Besides providing ration kits to about 150 families of sanitation workers, MLA Lakhvir Lakha felicitated sweepers and sanitation workers, who had been risking their lives by undertaking solid waste management and overflowing sewerage without required safety measures.

Laying stress on the significance of sanitation, Lakha said social distancing would yield desired resulted only when sanitisation is maintained by human resources in the sanitation department of urban local bodies.

Appreciating the role played by the members of the sanitation department at the civic bodies of Payal, Sihar, Doraha and Malaudh, Lakha said: “Now, when the whole world is on toes to fight the apndemic, the responsibility of providing clean and hygienic environment has fallen on the shoulders of sanitisation workers. We want you to protect yourself by taking nutritious diet and using safety measures while on work.”

Justifying the demands raised by the office-bearers and activists of outfits of sanitation workers, the MLA assured that he would take up their issue with the Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. Timely payment of wages, personal insurance worth Rs 50 lakh and enhancement of safety measures, were among the major demands of sanitary workers.
