Large portion of unsafe bridge over Buddha Nullah dismantled

A large portion of the old bridge, which was declared unsafe, over the Buddha Nullah on Old GT Road near Chand Cinema, here, has been dismantled.

The reconstruction work for the bridge is expected to commence soon after the demolition of the old structure. The old bridge is being dismantled using JCB machines. Meanwhile, traffic from Jalandhar Bypass towards Clock Tower or Jagraon Bridge has been diverted through a nearby bridge.

Notably, the bridge over the Buddha Nullah near Chand Cinema was declared unsafe in 2011 but its reconstruction project plan was delayed. The work to dismantle the bridge began several days ago and is expected to be completed shortly. Subsequently, a new bridge will be constructed in its place.

The bridge reconstruction project is being initiated under the supervision of the Public Works Department (PWD), with an estimated cost of approximately Rs 8.16 crore. It is expected to be completed within nine months.

Ravinder, a commuter, said after the demolition, the debris has fallen into the Buddha Nullah. “We hope that the debris will be cleared from the bridge in a timely manner. Moreover, it must be reconstructed within the fixed time period for the convenience of people,” he said.

Was declared unsafe in 2011
