Ludhiana, September 18

A 47-year-old jeweller shot himself dead from his licensed weapon at his residence in Panchsheel Vihar this morning. He reportedly took the extreme step due to a money dispute he had with some persons.

The deceased has been identified as Rohit Jain. He was owner of Heritage Jewellers situated on Mall Road.

Additional DCP-3 Sameer Verma said the incident happened early in the morning. He woke up and took his .32-bore licensed revolver and shot himself in the head. He died on the spot.

When the deceased’s mother woke up, she saw him lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to the nearby hospital but the doctors declared him brought dead.

The deceased is survived by a son, who was away to Delhi along with his mother.

The ADCP said the members of Jain’s family had alleged that he had a money dispute with two persons, namely Rohit and Sandeep.

Robbery at another jeweller’s shop

Four armed men yesterday struck at a jewellery shop at Jodhan and took away a box of precious stones. The police have registered a case.

Deepak, who owns Durga Jewellers at Gujjarwal Market, said while his father had gone home to have lunch in the afternoon yesterday, three men entered the shop. They posed as customers and asked him to deliver a gold bracelet they had ordered a few days ago.

“I was not aware of any such order. I was about to call my father when the robbers pounced on me and asked me to hand over gold and other valuables. They were carrying a double-barrelled gun which they trained at me. When I raised the alarm, the robbers picked up a box containing some stones and fled the scene,” he added.

Assistant Sub-inspector Gurmeet Singh of the Jodhan police station said footage of CCTV cameras was being checked to get some clue about the robbers.
