Jail inmate struck weapon deal on video call, say cops

The CIA-2 Wing of the Ludhiana Commissionerate nabbed a youth, Rahul Thapar (21), with illegal .32 bore weapon along with two live cartridges on Monday. His arrest has exposed the poor security arrangements at Central Jail, Ludhiana.

Inspector Beant Juneja said after the arrest of Rahul, his interrogation revealed that his friend Rohan, who is in jail since 2020 in a murder case, had called him from the prison and sent him to Ludhiana bus stand to collect an illegal weapon from a supplier.

“Rohan also interacted with the weapon supplier over video call and told him to handover the weapon to his friend Rahul,” said Juneja

Juneja said: ”We will interrogate Rohan to inquire how he got access to mobile phone in jail. His questioning will also unveil the names of illegal weapon suppliers”, added Juneja. Jail authorities were also informed by the police about the possession of phone by the accused Rohan.
