Gang of auto thieves busted, 5 held in Ludhiana

The police today claimed to have busted a gang of auto-rickshaw thieves, who stole cash from passengers, with the arrest of five of its members.

They have been identified as Rakesh Kumar Raman (25) and Atama Ram Bhola (27), both residents of Partap Chowk area; Karan Kumar Ghanayia (30) of the Ram Nagar market, Sanjiv Sharma Dana (28) of Shimlapuri and Amarjit Singh Dhoka (34) of Partap Nagar. The police have recovered 12 mobile phones and three auto-rickshaws from them.

Modus operandi

  • One of the gang members would drive the auto while the others acted as co passengers. On the way, they would steal cash from the pockets or bags of passengers.

The Joint Commissioner of Police, City, Bhagirath Singh Meena and ADCP 3 Sameer Verma conducted an online press conference regarding the case.

Meena said the police got information that the suspects were running a gang of robbers and they had rented a few autos.

The gang mainly targeted passengers visiting the DMCH and the Clock Tower as they thought persons visiting these places must be carrying huge cash.

One of the gang members would drive the auto while the others acted as co passengers. On the way, they would steal cash from the pockets or bags of passengers.

The police official said during preliminary questioning of the suspects, they confessed to having committed 40 such crimes.
