Ludhiana, October 14

The Police Division 5 busted a gang involved in furnishing bail bonds for criminals on the basis of fake documents.

Four members of the gang, including the kingpin, were arrested by the police. Harpal Singh, alias Manoj Kumar (32), and Rahul Kumar (39) of Phullanwal, Navdeep Singh (34) of the Civil Lines and Harvinder Singh (32) of Talwandi Noawad village include the arrested suspects. The police recovered 50 fake Aadhaar cards and 20 real fards (copies of land records) of properties.

ADCP 3 Sameer Verma and ACP Jatinder Singh conducted a press conference on the matter.

The ADCP said Manoj was the kingpin of the gang as he was the one who used to prepare fake documents such as Aadhaar card to apply for bail, while the other three persons used to appear in court to seek bail for accused in various cases.

Verma said as per the four suspects, they had furnished bails for over 150 persons in the recent past and were charging between Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 for per bail application.

Manoj was already facing a similar case and he recently came out on bail.

Role of revenue officials under the scanner

ADCP Verma said the suspects used to access the land records online and property which was not having any loan, were shortlisted by them as property having no loan can only be attached with the bail application. “Since the land records were accessible to the gang, it signals involvement of some revenue officials, we are probing the role of such officials and they will also be booked in the case, if found guilty,” he said.

Gang was preparing fake Aadhaar cards

ACP Jatinder Singh said after availing copy of the land records, the suspects used to prepare a fake Aadhaar card as per the fard records, which they used to submit in court to seek bail for criminals. The Aadhaar card was being made with some photo editor mobile phone app.

Police to write to sessions judge

The police said the records of bails arranged by the gang was being taken and the police would write to the Sessions Judge to seek cancellation of such bails. Action is also likely against those who had availed bails through the gang.
