Ludhiana, July 2

The anti-smuggling cell of the Ludhiana police nabbed four persons and recovered 306 cases of illicit liquor from their possession. The suspects attempted to kill the police party when their truck was cornered by the police.

Protest against ‘fake’ case

Members of Shri Guru Ravidas Sena on Thursday held a protest outside the Police Commissioner office against an alleged fake case of liquor smuggling. On June 25, the anti-smuggling cell had registered a liquor-smuggling case against Ranjit Singh, Raju Singh, Satnam Singh, Satnam, Jail Singh and Rupi Singh of Bholewal Jadid village after the police recovered 10 litre of illicit liquor from a plot. Dilwar Singh of Ravidas Sena alleged when the liquor was recovered, the suspects were not present there, but the police still booked them.

Those arrested are Vinesh Kumar of Gurmel Park, Sukhwinder Singh of Gurpreet Nagar, Davinder Singh of Lohara Road and Sanjiv Kumar of Daba Road.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Charanjit Singh said during routine patrolling yesterday, he got a tip-off that the above-said persons were going to deliver a illicit liquor.

The suspects had parked their truck carrying illicit liquor near the Jolly building in Model Town. The police raided the spot. On seeing the police, the suspects tried to run over the raiding party in an attempt to escape.

A case of attempt to murder and the Excise Act has been registered against the four. — TNS
