Farmers vow not to burn crop residue

Farmers of the region vowed to adopt zero crop residue burning culture during peasantry, with an intent to enhance their economic position and prevent pollution of the environment.

The oath was taken in response to a call made by the Sangrur administration, led by Deputy Commissioner Ram and Ahmedgarh SDM Vikramjit Singh Panthey, on the occasion of year-long celebrations of the 400th birth anniversary of Guru Teg Bahadur.

Concerned about hazardous effects of apprehended deterioration in air quality index (AQI) on Covid patients and people suffering from flu-like illnesses, the administration has cautioned the rank and file in governance to check stubble burning at all costs.

Appreciating the slogan conceived by the administration, ‘Cleaner air prerequisite for fight against corona pandemic’, SDM Vikramjit Singh Panthey reminded that even the first Sikh master Guru Nanak Dev had advocated necessity of keeping environment pious by saying ‘Pawan Guru Paani Pita Maata Dharat Mahatt’.

“Even if we ignore the outcome of other studies, including those by agricultural scientists, we cannot think of not following teachings of our Gurus, more particularly during a year when the 400th birth anniversary of Guru Teg Bahadur was being celebrated,” said Panthey.

He recommended that farmers of the border state should try to improve the ratio of income from existing mode of burning agricultural wastes to one supplemented by making optimum use of farm residues, including paddy stubble.
