Surya Grahan Mela to be a low-key affair

  • Every year, Solar Eclipse Fair (Surya Grahan Mela) is organised at Kurukshetra, Haryana, on a grand scale, in which lakhs of devotees participate. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Kurukshetra district administration has decided not to organise the fair on a grand scale this time. In a letter written to the governments of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and other states the Kurukshetra Deputy Commissioner stated, “Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Surya Grahan Mela is being organised briefly from 10:20 am to 1:47 pm on June 21. Devotees will not be allowed to participate in this mela.”

Agrawal said he had already directed the police to take strict action against people not wearing masks. He stated that any relaxation in curfew would be given under strict protocol and people would have to follow it. He said several relaxations had been provided to residents and that was why, they should prefer not to come out of their homes.

He said these challans could be issued by SDM, Tehsildar, Naib Tehsildar, Sub Registrar, police officials or gazetted officials. He said the amount collected from challans was being deposited at the Civil Surgeon Office, Ludhiana.

Agrawal informed that the Punjab Government had directed officials to take strict action against any person violating the Lockdown 5.0 and Unlock 1.0. He said as Section 144 of the CrPC had been in force, no relaxation would be provided in this regard.

Civil Surgeon Dr Rajesh Kumar Bagga said as per directions of the Punjab Government, any person not wearing mask would be fined Rs 500, if any bus owner, car owner or auto rickshaw or two-wheeler owner do not follow social distancing rules, they would be fined Rs 3,000, Rs 2,000 and Rs 500, respectively. Any person breaking home quarantine would be fined Rs 2,000 and any person spitting in public place would be fined Rs 500.
